The largest island in South Carolina and the fourth largest on the east coast, Johns Island offers numerous reasons why it is a great place to live. Local craft breweries such as Low Tide Brewing Company and restaurants like Tattooed Moose provide a convivial atmosphere and a great place to meet friends. The Fat Hen and Wild Olive are on the island and are considered two of the best restaurants in Charleston. A few minutes away is Wadmalaw Island where you can visit a vineyard, Deep Water Vineyard, and Charleston Tea Plantation.
Beautiful beaches and golf courses are the most popular attractions, but there is much more to see and do in and around Johns Island. Across the Kiawah River is Kiawah Island, which is the home of a resort gated community and a wealth of wildlife. You will certainly see at least one and maybe more alligators, deer, raccoons, bobcats, loggerhead sea turtles (in the right season), and more. The island has more than 30 miles of hiking trails, a playground in a 21-acre park, and two world-class tennis resorts. St Johns Island is just a 20-minute drive from downtown Charleston with its hundreds of years old structures. It was the first city in the U.S. to pass a historical preservation ordinance. Charleston is a sophisticated city with a laid-back ambiance. If you love water activities, look to James Island. You will find boating and fishing and many more water activities as well as playgrounds, golf courses, and restaurants. This is also a favorite antique shopping area.
Johns Island is home to hundreds of bird species as well as seasonal migrating birds. You will see bald eagles, wild turkeys, hawks, osprey, owls, egrets, ducks, and herons. Oysters are abundant and so are shrimp, many kinds of shellfish, and dolphins. Johns Island County Park features 738 acres of walking, running, and horseback riding trails through unspoiled nature. Charleston also offers some superb real estate. Mount Pleasant is a large community in Charleston County with plantations, ships, and streets on the National Register of Historic Places. With pleasant weather, most of the year, Johns Island, with its lanes of huge live oaks, is a great place to live for a slower lifestyle while being just minutes from the sophisticated attractions of Charleston.
